Another Escape

I have recently got involved in my classmate, Rachel Taylor’s project called Another Escape.  This is a brand she is creating that will ultimately act as a showcase and creative platform for young practitioners.
She has asked a handful of us to produce an image that shows adventure and/or escape.
I have found that the majority of my inspiration comes from the objects around me. The little things in life that at first appear mundane, can take on new life and meaning when illustrated with intense detail. I feel that it is these little moments in life, often overlooked, which give us a method of escape.
As an escape from stress, even if its just for ten minutes, I like to have a cup of tea and a ‘couple’ of biscuits.I believe that most people would be able to relate to this every day, easy way to escape life.
An escape doesn’t have to be big.
The solution can be in the little things in life.
Therefore I came up with this piece. It demonstrates my continuing work with the biscuit theme that I started for Anorak Magazine, combined with my theory that we should acknowledge  the little things we enjoy in life and indulge in these moments to find happiness.

Updated Entry

So I had my critique today at university and my group decided that they preferred this composition

to my previous entry to Anorak Magazine.

Therefore I emailed Anorak Magazine and kindly asked if they could possibly swap the designs. Which they happily agreed. I am much happier with the new composition as I am currently looking into typology of every day objects.

I think the previous entry was too packed in, too busy. I like how the new arrangement allows my work to speak for itself.

More Biscuits

More biscuits!!!!

Food is Fun

This is my entry for Anorak Magazine’s competition ‘Food is Fun’. The brief was to illustrate a creative and fun packed lunch. This is where I decided  it would be great to open your lunch box and find a mountain of biscuits inside. Who wouldn’t love that.

Therefore for the past month I have been drawing biscuits of all shapes and sizes.

I experimented with adding a colour to the background at first. However by selecting a colour that was similar to the biscuits it made the illustration to monotone.

Which resulted in the second image where I added a red border.  Although this made the image resemble the cover of a biscuit selection box.

Therefore I came to this outcome. No distracting background colour or border means the illustrations can now speak for themselves.

Joel Penkman

An artist who really inspired me while I was drawing my biscuits was Joel Penkman, Master painter of food.

The quote on his website ‘I love food, and I love to paint, so combining the two seemed like a good idea. ‘ is exactly how I feel when I am drawing food.

Anorak Competition

So this year is all about entering as many competitions as possible before I graduate next June. The first is with Anorak Magazine called ‘Food is Fun’. They have asked for Illustrators to dream up their ideal packed lunches. It didn’t take me long to envision what I would like in mine. A whole load of biscuits! Not the healthiest lunch but they didn’t ask for healthy. heh heh :)
