The next issue of Another Escape will be coming out soon and this is my contribution. The next issue is based around the theme of Spring. This meant baby animals and chocolate.

Poole Pottery Competition
Recently my illustration course was commissioned to create a design for a piece of Poole pottery. I started by researching into previous and current Poole pottery which resulted my first design. The shape of the pot was not supplied in the brief therefore I decided on a simple pattern using the colours of my university, purple and green.
The second design was a bit of fun. I would love to see my biscuit illustrations on a piece of Poole pottery. I created this repeat pattern to be wrapped around the pottery but it will also work as a wrapping paper design.
The Trenchermans Guide entry
When I asked my mum what she depicted as typical food from the South West , she automatically replied ‘A cream tea’. There is nothing she enjoys more than a cream tea in the garden during the summer. This is my entry for the Trenchermans Guide competition I entered in December. The Trencherman’s Guide is a collection of the best restaurants and hotels in the South West. It showcases the best restaurants with and without rooms across the South West.
Puffin Competition
This is my entry for the Puffin competition to find the new James and the Giant Peach book cover to celebrate Puffin’s 70th anniversary. I worked on this competition during my Narrative unit at University.
I decided to use these colours to complement the original penguin book cover designs.
The peach tree is described as being dead, whereas the peach is golden and glowing, therefore I wanted to portray this contrast. Continuing with this theme I placed the fresh peach on the front cover and the dead peach stone (which James converted into a home in central park, New York) on the back.
Crayon
Crayon is an eclectic exhibition I’m involved with in February alongside 13 other illustrators.
There is no theme and we all have different styles so it will be very interesting to see what everyone produces.
We are having the private viewing on Saturday 29th Jan 10 am -5:30 pm and then it shall be open to the public until the 23rd of February. Hope you can make it.
Arts Award
This morning I stumbled upon some photos of an exhibition I did in 2009. It was a showcase of work from students who were involved in the Arts Award at my old sixth form. I was called up to supply some work to show what I had accomplished a year after I had finished my Gold award 2007-2008.
AUCB Hoodie design Update.
I recieved an email from the student union saying that they liked my design but would like to see it in capitals. I was truly surprised to recieve this email as my last design was only a last minute entry and I believed nothing would come from it.
AUCB hoodie design.
Only just remembered this morning that it was the AUCB hoodie design competition deadline today so I quickly whipped up this design.
Nothing special but I thought I would give it a shot and I had put this competition into my action plan for university this week.
Although to be honest I want my friends design to win as she has drawn a speech bubble with hey, a ewe, the sea and a bumbble bee. Pure genius. I think for an arts university this would be a fantastic design for a hoodie. As soon as she posts it online I shall tag it on this post.
Hank the Jack Russell
Just after I had completed my second year studying at the AUCB, I was sent an email from my tutor concerning a publishers called ‘Bonobo’ who needed an illustrator. The illustrator needed to produce a series of illustrations for a children’s book called “Hank the Jack Russell”. We were given a short paragraph from the publishers which we could interoperate into as many illustrations as we saw fit.
Here’s Hank, the Jack Russell,
He is the friendliest chap.
He does his own thing,
and he has his own flap.
Have you met him before?
Are you one of his chums?
He doesn’t shake hands
He prefers to sniff bums.
His hobbies are jumping
and running for sticks.
He’ll sit, stay or come
but he doesn’t do tricks.
Along with these 6 illustrations we were asked to illustrate a scene with hank and his human family. One of the 1st scenes that came to my head was of the family shopping at an old-fashioned butchers, with Hank drooling whilst looking in the window.
Unfortunately I did not receive the commission, they sent me a lovely letter which stated that they liked the work but it was just not what the customer wanted. However every cloud has a silver lining because the publishers have decided to keep my work on file for any future clients to look at.
