Tony Chance

I recently attended a lecture by storyboard artist Tony Chance. I am currently working on a moving image project at university so this was a great chance to learn something about storyboarding.

I am creating a storyboard for an animation encouraging children to learn how to cook. The storyboard needs to demonstrate each step of the recipe.

Adobe Photoshop Cook

Maya Rota Klein made this stopmotion for competition AdobeYouGC.
It is a simulation of a tutorial which shows how to make butter cookies with the new ‘Adobe Photoshop Cook!’
The whole set was made with cardboard, kitchen utensils and ingredients.

In my own animation when I introduce the ingredients that are made up of granuals or are so small that they would be too difficult or time consuming to animate, I decided on using the real ingredients so that I could move them more freely than lots of little pieces of paper or a dozen different shaped drawings.

Food about you by Alexandre DUBOSC

This animation, a mixture of stopmotion and pixilation, was created by Alexandre to celerbrate the 50th anniversary of the international festival of animated film in Annecy 2010.

I enjoyed seeing the food portrayed in such an imaginative and scientific way. It made me think about the different ways I can animate my ingredients in my own animation.

Western Spaghetti by PES

This stop motion animation by PES has been a great inspiration towards my unit on moving image. I am considering using stop motion myself, combing a mixture of hand drawn elements, real ingredients and other mediums.

I enjoy how the original audio has been juxtaposed with this simulation to assist the audience in making the connection with certain ingredients.

The range of angles used in the animation is interesting, again the sound effects reinforce these. They allow you to appreciate the detail that has been incorporated.

Her Morning Elegance

“Her morning elegance”

The lost work of Vivian Maier.

I stumbled upon a short news article on Vivian Maier yesterday and I just found her work so breathtakingly beautiful I had to make sure as many people see her work as possible.

Her work was recently discovered by a man called John Maloof at an antique auction in Chicago. He now owns over 100,00 of her negatives 20-30,000 of which were still in the original rolls.

I am not normally an enthusiast for any particular photographer. I tend to just collect random photos from auctions so that I generally don’t know anything about the people in the image, hence I can imagine a story for them myself when I draw.

However there is just something about Vivian Maiers work that really inspires me. The moments she captures, the lighting, the angle, the stories they tell, I can’t stop thinking about the people in the images and what there lives might have been like, where they were going, what had happened in their day so far.

These sorts of things really interest me. All these different peoples lives crossing over, some connecting, others just moving on. It just makes you consider “What if’. What if something had played out differently, how their lives might have changed from just one decision.

Anyway If you want to know more about Vivian Maier, check out John Maloof’s dedicated blog for her.

Pixels by Patrick Jean

An amazing short film I just stumbled upon. Brought back some fond memories of my childhood.
